Book Review of THE NIGHTJAR’S PROMISE, Book 4 of The F.I.G. Mysteries
The Nightjar’s Promise is the fourth book in The F.I.G. Mysteries series. Our protagonist, Jennifer Torres, is one of the three FIGs (Females of Intellectual Genius), all of whom grew up in an orphanage where they formed an unbreakable bond with each other. Each of the FIGs has a particular talent and The Nightjar’s Promise focuses on Jennifer, whose artistic abilities secure her a place among the FIGs. This is a personal tale about Jennifer’s parents, who died when she was 15 years old. With the help of her friends, Jennifer must uncover the truth behind the nightjar and her family. This is a quintessential mystery novel that delivers everything you’d expect from this genre. Author, Barbara Casey’s writing draws the reader in immediately, making this book hard to put down. What truly stands out about the book is how the author makes the bond of female friendship the true star of the story. Casey presents these women as smart experts in their fields who support one another, and such positive female representation is inspirational for female readers of any age. Overall, this book is a must read for those looking for a compelling mystery that is both entertaining and educational. A real page turner! – Review by the Book Excellence Awards
THE NIGHTJAR’S PROMISE: Book 4 – The F.I.G. Mysteries
THE NIGHTJAR’S PROMISE: Book 4 of The F.I.G. Mysteries is scheduled for release on April 22, 2020.
Jennifer Torres, one of the three FIGs (Females of Intellectual Genius) who is a genius in both music and art, is the last to leave the closed rehearsal for her upcoming performance over Thanksgiving break at Carnegie Hall when she hears something in the darkened Hall. Recognizing the tilt of the woman’s head and the slight limp of the man as they hurry out an exit door, she realizes it is her parents who were supposedly killed in a terrible car accident when she was 15 years old.
Devastated and feeling betrayed, she sends a text to Carolina and the other two FIGs—THURGOOD. It is the code word they all agreed to use if ever one of them got into trouble or something happened that was too difficult to handle. They would all meet back at Carolina’s bungalow at Wood Rose Orphanage and Academy for Young Women to figure it out.
As soon as they receive the text, because of their genius, Dara starts thinking of words in ancient Hebrew, German, and Yiddish, while Mackenzie’s visions of unique math formulae keep bringing up the date October 11, 1943. That is the date during World War II when the Nazis—the Kunstschutz—looted the paintings of targeted wealthy Jewish families and hid them away under Hitler’s orders. And as Carolina waits for the FIGs to return to Wood Rose, she hears warnings from Lyuba, her gypsy mother, to watch for the nightjar, the ancient name for the whip-poor-will.
As they search for “The Nightjar’s Promise” and the truth surrounding it, Carolina and the FIGs come face to face with evil that threatens to destroy not only their genius, but their very lives.

The Gospel According to Prissy, Barbara Casey

Family Saga, Literature & Fiction, Women’s Fiction
The Gospel According To Prissy is a fascinating story populated with memorable characters. We have three Army veteran misfits, a college dropout, and unmotivated high school graduate accused of murder, a controversial warden of a women’s prison, a little girl with the gift of prophesy. Lara Kruger, 31, invites them into her life after suffering a miscarriage, a divorce from an abusive husband, and unemployment. It is a powerful tale told by a talented writer.
The Gospel According to Prissy is an incredible book that is unlike anything I have read before. The Gospel According to Prissy was a delight to read and an incredibly memorable one that I will struggle to forget for a long time thanks to the compelling story and extraordinary characters. The story is heart-wrenching at times thanks to the protagonist’s struggles while at other times it is inspiring as well as eye-opening and throughout it, you will undoubtedly feel a host of different emotions that will make you think about your own life and your own journey. This is thanks to the poignant journey of one woman as she surrounds herself with eccentric but fascinating characters as well as the impeccably well-developed story courtesy of the excellent author Barbara Casey who transfixes her readers from start to finish.
Barbara Casey is a remarkable author and a genius; she is a genius because she has expertly weaved numerous themes throughout her book The Gospel According to Prissy, in a flawless way in which all subjects blend perfectly together. The Gospel According to Prissy is an incredible book that has shocked and amazed me; the gripping nature of this novel combined with themes of finding yourself make The Gospel According to Prissy not only a stellar story but also a poignant one which should be read by everybody. If you do choose to read this book, then you will not be disappointed because it is an exciting, compelling and entertaining book that should not be missed!
The Gospel According to Prissy will introduce the reader to the protagonist of the novel, Lara Kruger, a 31-year-old woman who has experienced significant hardship in recent times. Lara suffered a miscarriage, as well as divorce her husband who was abusive and as well as this she is unemployed, so it is safe to say that she has had a terrible time lately. However soon things will be on the up for Lara when she invites eccentric but remarkable characters into her life, some of whom include Army Veterans, ‘a little girl with the gift of prophecy’ and even a college dropout as well as many more characters. The reader will follow Lara as she navigates this tricky time and the story that unfolds is sensational and should definitely not be missed book lovers.
The story of The Gospel According to Prissy is quite simply sensational as well as heartwarming. The Gospel According to Prissy is a book that deals with many poignant themes as well as uplifting themes and all of these topics are weaved perfectly together, and the outcome is a beautiful piece of literature that will stay prominent in readers minds for many weeks upon completion. To write I am astounded by The Gospel According to Prissy is an understatement, this captivating book captured me and held me prisoner until the very end. Its brilliantly clever, imaginative, original story is one that enthralled me from beginning to end, and this is thanks to the incredible author Barbara Casey who has managed to flawlessly write an astonishing novel that will keep you guessing until the very end.
Most contemporary fiction novels these days, in my opinion, are lackluster and predictable and so my faith in this genre has dwindled over the years. The Gospel According to Prissy, however, has restored my faith in contemporary fiction as this one is incredible! The story, combined with Casey’s flawless writing which feels as if it is spiked with adrenaline make The Gospel According to Prissy a stellar read and one that should not be missed.
Barbara Casey’s prose engrossed me very quickly thanks to the poignant themes she explores as well as the gripping narrative of Lara Kruger but what also gripped me was her sensitivity to subjects explored. The sensitivity and passion in Casey’s words were admirable and kept me turning the pages quickly as I desperately wanted to read more of her exceptional prose.
As I am madly in love with The Gospel According to Prissy and think it is a unique novel with a brilliant plot, I have no choice but to award it a dazzling five stars because it deserves this! The Gospel According to Prissy indeed is a captivating book, and so I hope you lovely readers take my advice when I write that you should read this excellent book, you will not regret it!
REASONS WHY TALK RADIO IS PERFECT FOR BOOK PROMOTION
Dear Readers,
Whenever I get the release date of my next new book coming out, I begin working on marketing and promotion for that book. Lining up book signings; scheduling virtual book tours, interviews, sessions with questions and answers, and book spotlights; sending out press releases; and setting up talk radio interviews, among other things, are what I include in my marketing program. Today I want to give you reasons why talk radio in particular is good for book promotion.
1. THE RIGHT DEMOGRAPHICS. Surveys confirm that the talk radio listener is, “diverse, educated, attentive, active and affluent…” If this describes your book-buyer – it’s a perfect match!
2. TARGET AUDIENCE. Not only are the demographics of talk radio great – but with specialty talk shows on politics, health, relationships, lifestyles, finance, consumer advocacy, sports, and other topics, it is easy to match your book with the audience you’re trying to reach!
3. EFFECTIVE SALES TOOL. Publicity can be paid advertising, but also much more. A compelling radio interview can sell your book without the audience even realizing they’ve been sold! And, as hosts don’t want to be bombarded with phone calls with questions about your book, they’re highly motivated to frequently mention your title so that listeners will remember it when they go to their local bookstore, or on Amazon.com.
4. THIRD PARTY ENDORSEMENT. Talk radio hosts have
loyal followings – that’s how they maintain their ratings. And listeners tune in daily to hear what their favorite host is talking about. As that host is often thought of as an old friend or even a trusted advisor, when you appear as a guest on their show, listeners hear an implicit endorsement of you, your book and your message!
5. CREDIBILITY. This is a crucial ingredient in every marketing campaign – and talk radio supplies it in abundance.
6. TIME TO TELL YOUR WHOLE STORY. As a guest – you get not just 60 seconds, but ten to sixty minutes, depending on the show, of quality time with a very targeted and attentive audience. You have enough time to talk about your book and, in many cases, you have a chance to answer questions from callers. It’s a perfect way to get the full message of your book heard and understood by your targeted readers.
7. COST-EFFECTIVE PROMOTION. Talk radio interviews are all done by phone. So, without ever leaving your home or office, you can have a direct and oftentimes live conversation with consumers around the country.
8. IMMEDIATE EXPOSURE. You can be on the air usually within two to three weeks!
So the next time you are thinking of ways to market your book, do some research into the talk radio shows around the country. Let the program producers know about your book and ask if they would be interested in having you as a guest on their show.
Good luck!
Barbara

PLANTING CLUES IN MYSTERY WRITING
One of my favorite genres when reading for my own pleasure is a good mystery. A good mystery writer must deceive the reader but at the same time play fair. In other words, the reader should know everything the detective knows, and know it at the same time. From that point on, it is a contest to see whether the reader or the detective unravels the puzzle and solves the crime first.
On the other hand, the mystery writer doesn’t want to reveal everything too early, thus enabling the reader or the sleuth to solve the crime halfway through the book. For this reason, the writer must plant the clues carefully and strategically; other clues need to stay hidden until the very end.
So how does a writer plant and reveal clues most effectively? Here are a few tips:
Mix a clue in with similar objects. A poisonous pill might be lurking inside a bottle of aspirin tablets. An expensive diamond pendant could be tangled up with a wad of costume jewelry. A particular key might not belong on the victim’s key ring.
Hide a clue in plain sight. A muddy footprint might be hard to spot if the room is dim and the carpet is brown. A candle stick could be taken from the fireplace mantle and used as a blunt weapon, then wiped off and returned to its normal place.
Misdirection. Shift the reader’s focus to an obvious clue while mentioning a second clue in an offhand manner. For instance, a bloody fingerprint, left on the little writing desk in the corner, will certainly attract attention, while the pile of mail on the corner of that same desk might go unnoticed for the time being—even though one of the letters was written to the victim by the murderer. Another method of misdirection is creating major action immediately after a clue’s been presented. In the chase or confusion or excitement that follows, the clue will be forgotten by the reader.
In Agatha Christie’s Cat Among the Pigeons, Hercule Poirot’s observation of a schoolgirl’s knees constitutes an unusual clue. Amidst a murder investigation, Princess Shaista is kidnapped from a London boarding school. Poirot, who had met the princess briefly, discusses the case with local law enforcement:
“Her knees,” he said. “Did you ever notice her knees?”
Adam stared at him in astonishment. “No,” he said. “Why should I?”
“There are many reasons why a man notices a girl’s knees,” said Poirot severely.
“Unfortunately, you did not.”
Adam asks what he’s getting at. Does he mean a scar or something of that kind? No, Poirot says, nothing at all like that.
At this point, the seed is planted with the reader. What on earth does Poirot mean? The mystery of the princess’s disappearance seems to be cleared up shortly afterward, when it is assumed that she was not kidnapped at all—that she instead ran away to marry someone.
Later in the novel, though, everything comes together. The girl presumed kidnapped was not Princess Shaista at all. Poirot explains how the real Shaista had been taken to a chalet in Switzerland and a government agent was sent to the school in her place. The substitute was older than Shaista but, Poirot says, “… that would hardly attract attention since Eastern girls noticeably look much more mature than their age. A young French actress who specializes in playing schoolgirl parts was the agent chosen.”
But the agent’s knees gave her away.
“I did ask,” said Hercule Poirot, in a thoughtful voice, “as to whether anyone had noticed Shaista’s knees. Knees are a very good indication of age. The knees of a woman of twenty-three or twenty-four can never really be mistaken for the knees of a girl of fourteen or fifteen. Nobody, alas, had noticed her knees.”
Nobody except Poirot—and perhaps some clever readers who caught on to his line of reasoning.
In my mystery novel The House of Kane, I drop bread crumbs—clues—throughout the story to explain the background of a strange, eccentric homeless man. These clues are either hidden or mixed in with other events and drama taking place within a major publishing house. It is only at the very end that the truth is revealed. So many readers have confessed to me that they totally missed the clues, even though they were in plain sight, making the ending even more rewarding and thrilling for the reader and for me as the author.

Visionary author’s book
is now under contract
for a major film
Meet Barbara
Barbara Casey is a visionary literary professional. With an affinity for creative imagining, Barbara has authored twelve books in both fiction and non-fiction, for both adults and young adults. Barbara’s familiarity and expertise within the publishing industry led her to establish her own literary agency where she devotes time to novelists, historians, politicians and journalists in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Japan.
Notably, Barbara was considered for a Pulitzer nomination and recently received a lifetime achievement award for her leadership in the writing industry.
Barbara’s latest book, THE CLOCK FLOWER, received a Book Excellence Award in 2018 in the Young Adult Fiction category. Barbara also received a Book Excellence Award in 2017 for her book, ASSATA SHAKUR: A 20th Century Escaped Slave, which is now under contract to be made into a major movie.
Challenges as an Author
With decades of experience in the literary industry, Barbara understands the amount of work it takes to write and market a book successfully.
“I have learned that once a book gets published, the work of the author is just starting.”
Her heavy work load and hectic schedule mean that she has to be very selective in the marketing she undertakes. Barbara places a high priority on maintaining an active social media presence, participating in interviews and events, obtaining book reviews and entering book award competitions.
“I feel it is critical to get book reviews as well as enter the top programs that offer awards.”
Barbara felt recognition from a professional awards program would help her book stand out and gain the positive attention, reviews and critical interest she was looking for.
Becoming a Book Excellence Award Finalist
When Barbara heard that her book received a Book Excellence Award, she was ecstatic.
“For me, each book I publish and each award I receive, it is like the first time. I am absolutely thrilled that people who love books like what I have created.”
The Book Excellence Awards helped Barbara gain the attention and sales she was looking for.
“All of my books have received increased visibility and, as a result, more sales.”
In addition, the program helped Barbara’s books garner positive attention from film producers which has led to one of her books being put under contract to be made into a major movie.
“The Book Excellence Awards Program has brought attention to several of my books over the past few years. Two of my books have now been optioned for major movies, one of which is now under contract.”
Barbara’s Success
Barbara’s accomplishments in the literary industry are second to none.
Barbara was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, in addition to receiving many other literary awards. She is a frequent guest speaker, panelist and judge for events at universities and writers’ conferences around the country including the SCBWI Regional Conference, the Harriett Austin Writers Conference in Athens, the Southeastern Independent Book Sellers Association, Florida Writers Association, and the University of Auburn, Montgomery.
WRITING FICTION FOR YOUNG ADULTS
Word count, language choice, and age of protagonist are what usually separate novels written for young adults from novels written for adults. What separates an adult novel from a YA is perspective.
For the most part, teens have what can only be described as tunnel vision. Everything is new to them; impulse control is faulty; and, generally speaking, it is difficult for them to reason out probable consequences to their actions. Because of these things, fiction written with a teen audience in mind is often more immediate. Adults are usually relegated to the background, and even if they’re not, they’re almost never given a POV of their own. Everything is filtered through the teens’ limited perspective. A good example of this is The F.I.G. Mystery Series where the strong emotions, thoughts, and actions of the three orphans are revealed to the reader through the perspective of each girl (Female of Intellectual Genius). In this case, however, I have chosen to include the adult perspective of their mentor and teacher, Carolina, who discovers that she, too, was orphaned at a very young age. In doing this, she becomes one of them. As the other adults in this series pop in and out and dance around the edges of each story, I have given Carolina more room.
In addition to being an important part of a teenager’s life, teen novels are recognized as an important financial element to the world of publishing. Through the years the number of YA titles published has grown along with sales. Another change that has occurred is in the writing of teen novels. An experimental-type of story, along with a made-up language, has become not only acceptable, but popular. In many cases, an experimental novel demands that the reader become an active participant in the story, literally decoding and translating while reading. The difficulty for the author is to keep the language lucid and close to the familiar so that the reader doesn’t become frustrated and lose interest.
In Book 1, THE CADENCE OF GYPSIES, of The F.I.G. Mystery Series, I introduce the Voynich Manuscript (the most mysterious document in the world), gypsies and their culture, a monastery in the small village of Frascati, Italy, an orphanage, and three female orphans who not only have intelligence quotients in the genius range, but they have been born with talents that they rely on to help them cope in a world where they are not understood. All of these things have been carefully researched and are based on truth rather than fiction. Yet they are presented as fantastic and not real—until you read the book. I carry the same elements over to Book 2, THE WISH RIDER, and Book 3, THE CLOCK FLOWER, while adding new elements to fit each FIG.
The characters, the ideas, and the stories must take center stage, and in the end, the reader must care. By using themes and elements based in reality that have the appearance of being unreal, the reader can more easily identify with the characters, become involved in the story, and feel a sense of resolution at the end.

Jennifer Torres, both parents killed in an automobile accident when she was sixteen. Exceptionally gifted in music and art. Orphan. Accepted to Juilliard.
The three FIGs—Females of Intellectual Genius—as they are called, have graduated from Wood Rose Orphanage and Academy for Young Women after returning from New York City where Dara learned why her mother abandoned her all those years ago, and they are now attending universities where they can further their special talents. This means they will be separated from each other and from Carolina, their much-loved mentor and teacher who is “one of them,” for the first time in their young lives. They vow to try living apart for one semester, in the so-called real world that doesn’t include the orphanage; but if things don’t work out, they will come up with another plan—a plan where they can be together once again.
Dara is invited through Yale University to take part in an exciting archeological project in China. Jennifer, once again visualizing black and white images and the unusual sounds of another cadence that seem to be connected to Mackenzie, is engrossed in creating her next symphony at Juilliard. Mackenzie, because of her genius at problem-solving, is personally chosen by a US Senator to get involved in a mysterious, secret research project involving immortality that is being conducted in a small village in China—not too far from where Dara is involved with the archeological site. Once there, however, she finds herself facing a terrifying death from the blood-dripping teeth of an ancient evil dragon. Her best friends, the FIGs and Carolina, rely on their own unique genius and special talents to save her as she discovers the truth of her birth parents.
